Sub-clinical mastitis, where visible abnormalities such as udder swelling, hardness of the affected quarter, pain, and watery milk remain absent result in reduced yields, loss of milk value and increased labour and treatment costs.

Sub-clinical states of mastitis are particularly dangerous. In this state, milk looks normal and the udder or quarter affected appears healthy. Sub-clinical mastitis can rapidly become clinical mastitis or can continue at sub-clinical levels, affecting milk production, milk quality, and spreading infection to other animals. Sub-clinical infections can remain unnoticed and render huge losses in quantity as well as quality of milk yield.

HOW IT WORKS

The electronic mastitis detector measures changes in the electrical resistance of milk, as the development of sub-clinical mastitis (asymptomatic stage) is accompanied by an increase in salt levels in milk, the electrical resistance changes.

This rule is considered to be the most reliable indirect test in diagnosing sub-clinical mastitis. The end benefit is that you can scientifically detect mastitis well before any obvious outward symptoms.

TESTING IS EASY

Milk the first portion of milk directly from the teat to measuring cup.

Pour out the milk and repeat the steps for other quarters or udders, unless using the 4 cup model, in which case you put all 4 samples in the cups, press the button to get the results for 4 quarters simultaneously.
Simply rinse in a bucket of water between testing other animals.
